Nejat Ezal: Memorial Scholarships |
The Ezal family has established four scholarships in Nejat's name: one for high school students at Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey; one for college students at Harvey Mudd College; one for graduate students at UC Santa Barbara; and one for American Board Schools in Turkey. |
Request from Mr. & Mrs. Ezal: Nejat’s major achievement in his short life was the positive impact he made on the lives of his friends and family. There would have been no bounds to his achievements had he continued to live – to that fact, everyone who knew him agrees. He was just starting to make his own path, his own destiny when he died . He was an Engineer turned Marine Biologist. His enthusiasm for his newly discovered field of interest was contagious. Even those more seasoned around him found ways in which to look at their field with a new surge of curiosity. He lived for the moment, yet he was always thinking about the future, and about the past. In his private library, books about politics, international relations and philosophy were just as numerous as those about marine biology, genetics and engineering. His knowledge extended far beyond the bounds of science. He was also interested in people, their actions, and the consequences of their actions. Nejat once told his best friend that he was incapable of hating anyone. Everyone who ever met him wanted to be part of his life. He was a person whom people looked at and thought, Wow! He is truly Alive!” And he truly cared. The Ezal family would like to request that more than just scholarship and financial need be taken into consideration when evaluating an applicant. The award should be given to someone who truly cares about our environment and the people who inhabit this planet, and with whom every member of the committee would like to become a friend, as well as a colleague. Only that person, who meets the above criteria, would be worthy of Nejat’s scholarship. |
